I rarely buy knitting patterns as so many are available free. But I made an exception last year when I saw the Awesome Hat pattern on Ravelry. What attracted me the most to this pattern was the way the crown of the hat is shaped so neatly. I don't have any ulterior motive for plugging this pattern other than it is one that I have tested and like enough to knit again. The pattern can be adjusted for children and adults. I knitted the largest size. The only modification I would make next time is to make it slightly longer to cover the ears.
I'm displaying the hat on a life-size glass model that I was lucky enough to find in a charity shop. I knit and take photos of so many hats that I have been looking for one of these heads for a long time. I actually saw one in a flea market last year for £35 and decided that I didn't want it that badly. Then I saw this one for sale at £15. That is still a lot of money. But it will see a lot of use and the money was going to charity, so I was happy to pay it. While not in use it makes quite a good ornament!

ReplyDeleteIt was such a lucky find because it was only a very last minute decision to go out that day and the lady in the shop said she had only just put it on the sale shelf. It was meant to be mine.

ReplyDeleteMy granddaughter recently knit a round hat. She cast on 100 stitches, wound up with 103, and asked me how to finish. She began her project as if knitting resolved itself magically, and I enjoyed showing her it merely was one of her favorite subjects, math. She decreased away the three stitches randomly on the next row and began decreases on a ten stitch gusset, then nine, then eight, and so on. She also learned to used dp's. Not a bad little project.
That's good. I wish my daughter would show some interest in knitting. Admittedly, she is up to her eyes in college work at the moment. Maybe one day.....

ReplyDeleteLovely hat Una it does look snug and warm, I wish I could find a model too, it would come in handy, I have been looking for a life sized baby doll for ages but haven't managed to find one that I can afford to buy. :)
ReplyDeleteI saw some head models in Hobbycraft, but they were polysterene and adult size. Ebay has some glass models like mine, but again in adult size. I sometimes look at the dolls in charity shops to see if any would be suitable for modelling baby hats.....without success.
