Hello and thanks for visiting my blog. I have been knitting on and off for 50 years and I recently learned to crochet. I love looking for wool bargains and making them into something useful. I mainly knit for charity. I occasionally knit for myself and family members if I find a really good pattern or if they ask nicely!!

My lucky day...

Today I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time.  My walk home from the gym takes me along a road which is one of the richest in the area.  I noticed that one family seemed to be having a table sale in their front garden.  I've seen that in other areas but never in this particular street.  I had very little money on me but curiosity overcame me and I crossed the road to take a closer look.

Most of the items seemed to be books, cups, and cushions.  But my eagle eyes spotted a bag of yarn under the table.  I had to wait patiently for a couple of people to move before I could dive in.  I thought I could maybe afford one ball of wool.  "How much is the wool?" I asked and the magic reply came "Take it.  Everything is free." It turns out that the family is moving and just wants to clear out a few things.  I thanked them effusively.  Other people were trying to give them money, but they thought that was really funny.

So I am now the happy owner of lots of yarn.  Most of it is dk acrylic which is perfect for some of my charity knitting.  There was also a patchwork knitting bag and a size 4.00mm crochet hook which will be very useful as I amazingly didn't already have that size.

The yarn was very clean.  I put it out in the sunny garden for an airing, but it didn't really need it.  I've just spent a happy hour sorting it into various weights and colours and I can already see a baby blanket and other baby items waiting to be knitted/crocheted.  How lucky am I..........

  1. It certainly was your lucky day. How very generous of them just to give everything away.

  3. Lucky lucky you, it is so nice that the owners took the time and trouble to give everything away rather than just dump it in a skip somewhere. This yarn will now be lovingly used and the items that are made will be lovingly received :-)

  7. It was meant to be, Una, because you will put all that wool towards great causes, I know. That variegated yarn at the back looks very appealing. What a happy find! It clearly had your name on it!

    1. The variegated yarn is my favourite and I'm itching to start something with it. But I have other things to finish first....I'm forcing myself not to start too many projects.

  8. How wonderful Una! A case if being in the right place at the right time:-). I will be in London on Wednesday, staying in Earls Court where the Aussies all congregated in the 1960s and 70s...I've promised to take photos of the streets and buildings for friends who did the UK working holiday in our youth :-)

    1. I hope you enjoy London. But you will find it has changed a lot since the 60s. I hope you can recognise some of it.

    1. It doesn't usually happen to me either, so I walked the rest of the way home on cloud nine.

  10. What a great find! It sounds like it worked out well for everyone - for you so you would have more charity knitting yarn, the recipients of your knitting, and the people who were trying to clear out some things!

  14. How lucky, what a great thing to happen! So nice that they took the trouble to sort out all their unwanted things rather than sending them to landfill, lovely that they weren't charging for anything either. Must have put smiles on lots of people's faces. You will be able to put the wool to good use & enjoy doing so. Looking forward to hearing about the knitting adventures & seeing the photos,

  15. What a wonderful gift! It's really nice when spare, unwanted yarn finds its way to a good knitter/crocheter. All the yarn in the world should be made into something useful and loved, don't you think?
